Frederick Beginner Pickleball: Which Clinic Fits You?
October 5, 2026

You don’t need a rating to choose your first clinic. Start with what happens when you play: are you learning the rules, trying to make a new stroke repeatable, or working on points at the net?
I teach clinics and skills assessments at The Pickl Park, 355 Ballenger Center Drive, Frederick, MD 21703. Here’s how to read the class lineup and find a session that fits your game.
Brand new? Start with 101
101 — Intro to Pickleball is the starting point if you’ve never held a paddle or have only tried the game a couple of times.
The class description covers grip, ready position, serving, returning and basic rules. You’ll work on starting a point and understanding what’s happening once the ball is in play.
You don’t need to arrive with a rating or a polished swing. This is the introduction.
Newer and want the fundamentals? Choose 101A
101A — Repetition & Foundations focuses on repeating the mechanics introduced in 101, then making them hold up against a live ball.
101A is for newer players who want the fundamentals. You don’t have to complete 101 first. Choose it when you want more practice with the basics.
The useful distinction is the goal: 101 introduces the game; 101A gives the basics more repetition.
Already rallying and struggling at the net? Look at 201
201 — Net Play & Dinking Under Pressure is aimed at regular players who can rally but lose their plan once the action moves to the net.
Its focus is net play, handling pace and deciding when to attack. It builds on playing experience. A higher class number is not a reason to skip the introduction if you’re still learning how a point works.
If you’re not sure whether 101A or 201 is the better fit, describe what you can do comfortably and where the point breaks down. That gives me something useful to work with.
What about the other classes?
104 — Third Shot Drops targets players who already rally comfortably and want to work on getting forward from the baseline.
204 — Defense to Offense: Mid-Court Play is listed for regular players. Check the actual dated description and coach before booking; a similar class number does not mean every instructor teaches the same session.
A Skills Assessment gives you a more structured look at your game. The beginner/intermediate option’s description includes a written report, a rating and two things to work on next. That is a paid venue program, not a free introductory lesson or a promise of an official DUPR rating.
If you want a lesson built around one specific issue, private coaching at the same venue is another option. Send a request and I’ll confirm a time and the booking details.
Check the actual session before paying
The class lineup tells you what I teach. The Pickl Park handles clinic booking and payment.
Open the venue’s clinic listing, then check the session you want for:
A recurring pattern on my site is not a confirmed reservation. If you can’t find the class or the listing won’t load, contact me at 301-325-4731 before making a different booking.
Before your first visit
Bring court shoes and water. My class page lists loaner paddles and supplied balls; confirm equipment availability for the specific session if you need to borrow a paddle.
Use 355 Ballenger Center Drive as your destination and follow the venue’s check-in instructions. The courts are indoors, but that does not replace checking whether your particular class is running.
Come with one clear question. “I can serve, but I don’t know where to stand afterward” gives us a useful starting point.
Quick answers
Do I have to take 101 before 101A?
No. 101A is for newer players who want the fundamentals; completing 101 is not required.
Do I need a DUPR rating?
The class descriptions use experience cues rather than rating thresholds. Check the dated session for any specific eligibility rules.
Is a skills assessment free?
No. The Pickl Park’s skills assessments are paid venue clinics. Check its listing for the current price.
Can I book a clinic through a private-lesson request?
Clinic booking goes through The Pickl Park. The private-lesson request is a separate flow.
Does the guide confirm next Monday’s class?
No. Check the actual dated venue listing and named coach before registering.
